The question is sometimes asked, “What are the differences between a memorial service and a funeral?” A memorial service can be a celebration of life, held at any time after the death/transition of a person, and/or usually the physical body is not present. A funeral service can be more formal, typically within a week of the death/transition of a person, and/or usually has the body present.

However, every service is an honoring of the deceased and is designed to give closure to the living. At times, the deceased has made pre-arrangements for their memorial/funeral service. If not, the family and/or friends discern what they would like in the service.
